DERIB ◊ - Lot 133
DERIB ◊ BUDDY LONGWAY L'eau de feu (T.8), Lombard 1979 Original plate no. 14, prepublished in Le Journal de Tintin n° 172 of December 22, 1978. Signed. India ink on paper 36 × 46 cm (14.17 × 18.11 in.) Swiss artist Derib (Claude de Ribeaupierre, dit...) arrived at the Journal Tintin in 1974, at a time when Greg had already revolutionized the genre, notably with Hermann's western Comanche. Derib made his mark with his trapper because he had a very un-Western vision of his universe: first, his hero aged from episode to episode. Then he brings in a new sensibility, invoking respect for nature, for example. A humanist, he takes a clear stand in favor of the American Indians, as his hero joins forces with Chinook, a young Indian girl. With his generous brush, Derib brilliantly depicts the wide-open spaces of North America, taking his heroes right into the den of a bear. A remarkable author.
