Foster - Lot 123
Foster HAROLD FOSTER PRINCE VALIANT King Features Syndicate Original strip No. 1240, published on the Sunday page by King Features Syndicate on November 13, 1960. The title and speech bubbles are imprints applied to the original. India ink on paper 65.7 × 92.7 cm (25.87 × 36.5 in.) Edgar P. Jacobs and Grzegorz Rosinski both cited Harold Foster as an influence. After the Tarzan series, the American artist created Prince Valiant in 1937, a classic of American realistic comics. Drawing inspiration from history painting and the great American academic illustrators (Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish…), Foster approached comics through the lens of the Arthurian world. His linework, as seen here, is exemplary in its clarity. The accuracy of his anatomical depictions and the precision of his illustrations—grounded in the most recent historical research—make him the leading figure in an international lineage of artists ranging from Hans Kresse in the Netherlands to Jacques Martin in Belgium and François Bourgeon in France. Along with Alex Raymond (Flash Gordon) and Milton Caniff (Terry and the Pirates), Foster is one of the three most influential American realist artists of the 20th century.
