India ink and watercolor on paper 30 × 40 cm (11.81 × 15.75 in.) Full-length portrait of Amaury de Bois-Maury, Hermann's hero, returning from the Holy Land to reclaim his castle and lands. An "epic and tragic gesture", as the author would say, from which the human being - the "biped" as Hermann calls him - does not emerge the better for it... In this direct-color cover, Hermann displays all his colorist's mastery, with a light-saturated background that highlights his hero against the light. The colors are light, with little substance, and the author plays with the opposition of cold colors (in the foreground) and warm ones, which contributes to the depth of the drawing.
