Jijé - Lot 112

JIJÉ
JERRY SPRING
Lune d'argent (T.3), Dupuis 1956
Original plate no. 32,
prepublished in Le Journal de Spirou
n°892, May 19, 1955. India ink and
white gouache highlights on paper
30.5 × 41.2 cm (12.01 × 16.22 in.)
Some of Jijé's plates are "blacker". This is because he is an heir to Milton Caniff. He understands how silhouetting in shadow is a powerful factor in legibility, while at the same time lending weight to the image. There's always an element of formal research. He's a painter, a stylist above all. With his skilful brush, he shapes his images with mastery: a chic setting, with little documentation, conventional stories: fights, chases, but above all, cut into six frames per page for the sake of legibility.
