In this illustration based on the characters developed in L'Indien Blanc, Ralph Meyer draws inspiration from engraving techniques, striating the sky, but also playing on the opposition of planes. The Indians are depicted in white against the black background of the mountain, while the dark Jonas stands out against the white of the snow. The play of contrasts in this illustration is obvious and leads to a beautiful succession of shots. I used acrylic for the white projections on Jonas's horse and Salvaje's horse. This lends a note of lightness to the powdery snow in which they are struggling to make headway. R.M.
