ANDRÉ JUILLARD
LE CAHIER BLEU, Casterman
Portrait of Louise, original illustration published
in Entracte published by Daniel Maghen in 2006.
Signed. Black stone and pastel on paper
20.9 × 29.5 cm (8.23 × 11.61 in.)
André plays with the grainy texture and brown color of paper. His dark, matte black stone, made from ampelite, most often comes from the Brittany he loves so much... Many painters used it during the Renaissance, often enhanced with white gouache, dry Indian ink or washes. For his part, the author of Cahier bleu accompanies it with pastel. Louise, pensive, her gaze a little dark, her hair in disarray, large rings in her ears, a stole hastily thrown over her shoulders, takes on the allure of a mysterious gypsy. As a child, line was my graphic expression. Then came light and shadow. My sketches seem "freer" because they are less constrained by the story. A.J.
