Juillard - Lot 77
Juillard ANDRÉ JUILLARD Original illustration, research for postcard for postcard visuals in the 1980s. Signed. India ink, wash and graphite on paper 32 × 24 cm (12.6 × 9.45 in.) In the 1980s, the comic-book postcard craze was in full swing, and André Juillard was happy to oblige... Not really a constraint, in fact, as he enjoyed diversifying and relaxing between two lives of L'Épervier. As soon as an episode is completed, André Juillard is quick to use some of his own compositions from memory. For each variation, the artist multiplies his pencil sketches and research, signing as many miniatures sometimes enhanced with hatching or a light wash. A way for him to draw more freely and rediscover his beloved "paper family". This breathing space, which he allowed himself from time to time, enabled him to discover another facet of his talent. If he could have made a living doing nothing but book illustrations, I think André would have done it. His father was a great bibliophile, and his son spent a lot of time immersed in his books. He was more fascinated by the illustrations than by the texts, especially as there was a profusion of history books. Anne Juillard
