Juillard ANDRÉ JUILLARD FEATHER IN THE WIND Beau-Ténébreux (T.3), Dargaud 2001 Original plate no. 25, prepublished in BoDoi no. 41, May 2001. Signed. India ink and colored inks on paper 36 × 47 cm (14.17 × 18.5 in.) Beau-Ténébreux, the third part of Plume aux vents, appeared in the monthly BoDoï between April and June 2001 (#40 to #42). Dargaud published it as an album. After setting sail for the Americas in the hope of finding her father, Ariane de Troïl faces the perils of the New World. As the second half of the story unfolds, Beau defends the young woman, only to have his face slashed. Never mind that the Mohawk Indian renames himself Beau-Ténébreux, just as Ariane becomes Lionne-des-Montagnes and Plume-aux-Vents. And never mind that Beau is more attracted to men, Ariane will marry him! In a time that seems to have been suspended, enjoying a little peace and quiet and a lovely spring, she is welcomed by the wise Vieux-Castor and his wife Vieille-Loutre. I loved Beau, this homosexual living with no problems in his tribe. I liked the relationship, the dialogues between Ariane, who has amnesia, and Chief Vieux-Castor, her adoptive father. I liked making Beau an Enlightenment spirit avant la lettre. A man without the religious prejudices of Western societies, who loved science, philosophy and culture at their most exciting. Beau is what we call an honest man, a man who cultivates himself through a passion for knowledge. He's not aggressive, but he knows how to defend himself when necessary. A.J.
