ANDRÉ JUILLARD
THE 7 LIVES OF THE SPARROWHAWK
Le Maître des oiseaux (T.5), Glénat
Original illustration for cover research
in 1989. Signed. India ink, colored inks,
graphite and white gouache on paper
28.6 × 29.6 cm (11.26 × 11.65 in.)
When sketching the cover of one of the 7 Lives of the Sparrowhawk, André Juillard let his imagination run wild. How to sum up such a fresco? Depending on the episode, which character(s) should be featured? The layout of the "Vécu" collection must also be taken into account. In addition to the main visual, the image must be continued on the reverse side, in a column on the right. For Le Maître des oiseaux, his research initially led him to draw Maître Léonard, known as Langue-Agile, imprisoned by the provost Torchepot. A poet and possible incarnation of the devil, this mysterious old man seems to be pulling all the strings. A quick pencil sketch on the right completes the scene. At bottom right, a draft remains in pencil, showing Gabriel shirtless, his face still covered by his mask. His cape conceals his amputated arm. Two other images are inspired by the fratricidal struggle between Yvon and Gabriel de Troïl. The first, seen from a slight low angle, focuses on the elder de Troïl's helmet; Yvon moves away, leaving his younger brother wallowing in his grief. The third research will serve as a model for the final cover. André specifies underneath: "change the blue"... which will indeed be replaced by a brighter yellow.
