How could she possibly imagine that Gabriel de Troïl, her real father, is hidden beneath this crimson suit? In three vertical panels, the two characters play a game of cat and mouse. A central horizontal vignette follows. Unseen, Yvon replies to his brother. Close-up on the right of Masquerouge and the teenager, both frozen. Three vertical boxes follow. Dressed in his armor, ready for battle, Yvon approaches. His brother ironizes. Champ-contrechamp. Magnificently staged, this panel combines elegance and richness of detail, without losing sight for a moment of its legibility. Great art. It's true that I work a lot on my costumes, but on the other hand, I refuse to let myself be obsessed by the truth of the reconstruction. Sometimes you have to be able to abstract yourself from documentation to serve something more important: the story... For the purposes of staging, I may have to transgress historical accuracy. But isn't it another way of serving history to know how to shake it up to make it more exciting? A.J.
