ANDRE JUILLARD
THE 7 LIVES OF THE SPARROWHAWK
LE MAITRE DES OISEAUX (T.05), GLENAT 1989
Original plate no. 13, prepublished in Vécu no. 38 in 1988. Ink on paper
32.6 x 45 cm (12.83 x 17.72 in.)
Ariane is still unaware of the masked vigilante's identity. How could she possibly imagine that Gabriel de Troïl, her real father, is hidden beneath this crimson suit? In three vertical panels, the two characters play a game of cat and mouse. A central horizontal vignette follows. Unseen, Yvon replies to his brother. Close-up on the right of Masquerouge and the teenager, both frozen. Three vertical boxes follow. Dressed in his armor, ready for battle, Yvon approaches. His brother ironizes. Champ-contrechamp. Magnificently staged, this panel combines elegance and richness of detail, without losing sight for a moment of its legibility. Great art.
It's true that I work a lot on my costumes, but on the other hand, I refuse to let myself be obsessed by the truth of the reconstruction. Sometimes you have to be able to abstract yourself from documentation to serve something more important: the story... For the purposes of staging, I may have to transgress historical accuracy. But isn't it another way of serving history to know how to shake it up to make it more exciting? A.J.
