TIF AND TONDU
Le Fantôme du samouraï (T.34), Dupuis 1986
Original plate no. 1 from the story "L'Aventure est
au coin de la pompe", prepublished in Risque-Tout n° 13
February 16, 1956. Signed. India ink on paper
This is the first plate of an episode published in Risque-Tout, a tabloid-format newspaper that everyone was hoping would be placed in a major daily, like the American sunday pages. European daily newspaper publishers hovered around the idea, but never came to a conclusion. Eventually, they gave up. In 1955, Georges Troisfontaines, who managed the Dupuis advertising department while running his own press agency, World Press, and who supplied Dupuis with series (Buck Danny, L'Oncle Paul, Marc Dacier...) decided to launch his project with the stars of Spirou. Maurice Rosy was the artistic director, and it was only natural that Will and Tif et Tondu should feature in the cast. But the deal fell through after a year, leaving the series unfinished: "Risque-Tout was Rosy's child, but it was too early for this kind of large-format publication. Dupuis gave it a try, and when it started to work out, they stopped..." (Will to Gilles Ratier).
