JEAN-CLAUDE FOURNIER SPIROU AND FANTASIO The Ankou (T.27), Black and White Original illustration done in 2020 for a bookplate for the large format version to be published by Black and White. Signed. Watercolor, India ink and pencil on paper 32 × 41 cm (12.6 × 16.14 in.) In 2020, Jean-Claude Fournier proposed an original bookplate for the large-format version of L'Ankou, the 27th volume of Spirou et Fantasio published a third of a century earlier in the journal Spirou. The Ankou, a central figure of Breton mythology, is supposed to represent the servant of death - it is said that he, followed by his old carne and a wobbly cart, will warn the mortals of the end of their journey - seems to have taken a liking to our two friends. At least he has put them in the good camp, unlike the representatives of the nuclear lobby, who are about to experiment with a highly radioactive substance, capable of destroying his beloved Brittany. Let's remember that at the time the story appears, anti-nuclear people are fighting daily against the implantation of a new power plant in Plogoff, in Finistère. For this new drawing, Fournier takes up the idea of a sudden and miraculous stop at the foot of a waterfall, following a spectacular stunt in a Renault 5 The so popular R5. Another trick of the Ankou?
