PATRICE PELLERIN THE SPRINGER Secret Archives, Dupuis 2006 Original illustration. Signed. Gouache and acrylic inks on paper 60.5 × 43.8 cm (23.82 × 17.24 in.) The Medusa arrives in front of Quebec City, the capital of Canada and New France in the 18th century. It was a small city at the time, with two parts: the lower and upper parts, the latter housing the noble and administrative buildings. In the foreground is a small boat hoisting the Malouin flag. Unable to cross the Atlantic and without a shipyard in Canada, these small ships were built in kit form in the arsenals of Rochefort or Brest and transported to the bottom of the hold to be assembled on the spot! This is typically the kind of drawing where one wonders if one will get to the end. In direct color, therefore without the right to damage the paper, in indelible acrylics, therefore without the possibility of repentance and in large format, which poses handling problems, especially in the drawing of boats. So, when it's finished, we breathe a big sigh of relief and we admire even more Juillard or Gibrat, who work like that all the time. P.P.
