Enchantment, original illustration made in 2020. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper
57 × 43 cm (22.44 × 16.93 in.)
The expressive force is in the movement of each of the three musicians. The movement of the bassist's hair, the concentration of the pianist, and the slight arch of Jazz's back. In the background, all the customers of the place are smiling, attentive. Roger draws the face and expression of each of them. Farther to the right, in the shadows, a mysterious being emerges, reminiscent of the character of José Nieto in Diego Velázquez's painting Las Meninas. The light emerges like a flash, falling on Jazz and the bass player and bringing them into focus. Not forgetting the pianist, who appears in the foreground, a character technically reinforced by the black spots. The composition and the expressive strength of the ensemble allow us to hear their music.
"I love this illustration. Roger's mastery of inking is more than evident. Seeing his originals up close, I always feel that his ink has a different density than any other artist. Each line, each spot, seems to have weight and even relief. This is not the result of the ink alone, the use of white gouache to create points of light and atmosphere has a lot of place in Roger's work. In this image, we clearly realize this technique that Roger sublimates by giving strength and movement to a composition a priori static. Wonderful! "Josep Homs
