Jijé - Lot 6
Jijé JIJÉ TANGUY AND LAVERDURE Baroud sur le désert (Vol. 14), Dargaud 1970 Original plate no. 22, numbered 24, based on the script by Jean-Michel Charlier, previously published in the Pilote magazine No. 517 on October 2, 1969. India ink on paper 45.6 × 55 cm (17.95 × 21.65 in.) This is a magnificent panel by Jijé, set in the middle of a plot in which Tanguy and Laverdure attempt to restore an emir to the throne, against a backdrop of manipulation and a coup d’état orchestrated by a major foreign oil company. Geopolitics, highly technical depictions of aviation equipment, and patriotic fervor drive this sequence by Jean-Michel Charlier, in which our heroes are this time in a helicopter being pursued by a Soviet-made MiG. The way the helicopter shakes off the fighter is exemplary, as is the crash scene, in which the flight maneuver is perfectly depicted. It’s true that the great scriptwriter held a pilot’s license. Even we, who aren’t pilots, can tell in a sequence like this!
