Manara - Lot 240
Manara MILO MANARA GIUSEPPE BERGMAN Day of Wrath (Vol. 2), Casterman 1983 Original page no. 143, first published in (À Suivre) no. 51 in April 1982. India ink and graphite on paper 47.9 × 65.7 cm (18.86 × 25.87 in.) This panel perfectly illustrates Manara’s talent in the 1980s as well as his significance in contemporary comics: transforming eroticism into a poetic and symbolic language. A nude woman occupies most of the visual space, while Giuseppe Bergman—fully clothed, hence the dreamlike quality of the sequence—finds himself confronted with a vision in which the female body insinuates itself into his mental landscape. The composition plays on shifts in scale that foreshadow his later *Gulliveriana* (1996). Little by little, reality fades away. The reader is drawn directly into the fantasy. The drawing, with its great elegance, combines the lightness of the line with a sophisticated composition that guides the eye across the page. This sequence reveals what sets Manara apart from many erotic authors: sexuality here is less an end in itself than a means of exploring the unconscious mechanisms of desire, imagination, and creation.
