Ledroit - Lot 225
Ledroit OLIVIER LEDROIT XOCO Obsidian Butterfly (Vol. 1), Vents d'Ouest 1994 Original illustration no. 12. Acrylic and India ink on paper 50 × 65 cm (19.69 × 25.59 in.) Before piling battles into thunderous worlds, Ledroit created this subdued tale, written by Thomas Mosdi, set in 1930s New York. The lighting is twilight-like (which makes sense: he was coming off *The Chronicles of the Black Moon*), the artwork is ultra-realistic, and the atmosphere seems to come straight out of a version of Sergio Leone’s *Once Upon a Time in America*, blended with Francis Ford Coppola’s *The Godfather*. The quality of the research, the layout work, and the attention to texture represented a tremendous workload for the author. That’s why he immediately returned to the fantasy worlds that had made him famous.
