Pratt - Lot 200
Pratt HUGO PRATT Sergeant Kirk Original illustration, created for the Argentine magazine *Super Misterix* in June 1954. India ink and colored inks on paper 49.7 × 34.8 cm (19.57 × 13.7 in.) Created during Hugo Pratt’s Argentine period, the Sgt. Kirk series represents a major milestone in the work of the future creator of Corto Maltese. *El Sargento Kirk* debuted on January 9, 1953, in issue No. 225 of the weekly *Misterix*, published by Abril, the publishing house of Cesare Civita, an Italian Jewish publisher forced to leave his country after the enactment of the fascist racial laws of 1938. The series was written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and is considered one of the foundations of Pratt’s future work. It tells the story of an American cavalry sergeant who deserts to defend Native Americans, overturning the traditional conventions of the Western genre. This deeply humanistic perspective on the conquest of the West stands in stark contrast to that of Hollywood cinema of the time (John Ford, Raoul Walsh…), where white settlers generally played the heroic role. Abducted by the military junta in 1977, Héctor Germán Oesterheld was murdered while in captivity, while Hugo Pratt, having returned to Europe, was already enjoying international success thanks to Corto Maltese.
