Tardi JACQUES TARDI ADÈLE BLANC-SEC The Mad Scientist (Vol. 3), Casterman 1977 Original artwork no. 32. India ink on paper 32.5 × 44 cm (12.8 × 17.32 in.) The motif of the mad scientist can be found in the works of both Hergé and André Franquin. It is a “meme” of fantasy literature, ranging from Mary Shelley’s *Frankenstein* to Gaston Leroux’s *The Bloody Doll*. It is this very genre—the “five-cent novels”—that Tardi draws upon, with his flair for the spectacular and the burlesque. The idea this time is to resurrect an Australopithecus and parade him all over Paris. He runs into a naive priest who brings to mind Georges Brassens’ song “Gare au gorille,” while Adèle is off to a mysterious rendezvous. This blend of nonstop twists and turns, Grand Guignol-style characters, chases at twilight through Haussmannian Paris, and boulevard theater-style dialogue gives the Adèle Blanc-Sec series an indescribable charm that still resonates 50 years after its creation. That is the hallmark of timeless works. Didier Pasamonik
