Vance - Lot 131
Vance WILLIAM VANCE XIII Three Silver Watches (Vol. 11), Dargaud 1995 Original plate no. 48. India ink on paper 45 × 61.4 cm (17.72 × 24.17 in.) In this eleventh volume of the XIII series, Van Hamme continues to keep readers guessing about the true identity of our hero with the white temple, with an old story about a chest containing 100,000 pesos in gold, whose location is revealed by three silver watches. Van Hamme readily admits that this is a nod to the three messages hidden in the model ships in *The Secret of the Unicorn* (a device itself inspired by Jules Verne’s *Michel Strogoff*, but never mind…). It also brings to mind an old *Blueberry* story… In this sequence, XIII, alias “El Cascador,” is sent by Maria, the new president of Costa Verde, to blow up a bridge in order to prevent the return of the former dictator’s mercenaries. Unfortunately, the mission fails, and “El Cascador” is captured by the horrible Peralta. Fortunately, at the controls of his F-15, Jones blows up the bridge and kills the Nazi-headed assassin. The Santosist revolution can finally be accomplished! The Vance/Van Hamme duo’s talent for blending intrigue and action is absolutely unmatched.
