Bonhomme - Lot 37
Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke's Long March, Lucky Comics A tribute to Frédéric Remington, original illustration created in 2026. Signed. India ink, colored inks, and gouache on paper 70 × 48.8 cm (27.56 × 19.21 in.) In the original painting by American artist Frederic Remington, *The Stampede*, created in 1908, a cowboy was galloping at full speed alongside a herd of cows in a thunderstorm. Here, the cows have been replaced by bison, which are more massive and, consequently, more impressive. Another difference: in Remington’s painting, the rain was falling, whereas here it looms menacingly, as evidenced by the flashes of lightning visible in the distance. Otherwise, in this large-format drawing, Matthieu Bonhomme sought to stay true to the original colors by using a mix of yellow and green tones that are rather atypical for him. The light, which is very bright on the ground, contrasts with a gradient that gradually darkens from left to right in the upper portion, further highlighting the area stretching from the clouds to the storm. Note the contrast between Lucky Luke’s expression—apparently focused yet serene—and Jolly Jumper’s anxiety, as if the animal, like the bison, were more frightened by the lightning than his rider. “Since Frederic Remington is one of the greatest Western painters, it seemed to me that Lucky Luke, as an iconic character, belonged in one of his paintings. This large-format drawing is therefore both a tribute and a reinterpretation that allows him to be integrated into the myth of the Western as glorified by the American artist.” M.B.
