Bonhomme - Lot 36
Bonhomme MATTHIEU BONHOMME LUCKY LUKE (AS SEEN BY...) Lucky Luke's Long March, Lucky Comics High Moon, original illustration created in 2026. Signed. India ink, colored inks, gouache, and watercolor on paper 41.8 × 54 cm (16.46 × 21.26 in.) In *Lucky Luke’s Long March*, the hero, after having his horse and gun stolen by Ronald Cramp’s men, finds himself alone on foot, at night, in the snow. In this drawing, which references that episode, the artist has restored the hero’s revolver to him, as if this iconic accessory were indispensable to him. But his expression leaves no doubt about the anxiety and cold that have overcome him. This feeling is intensified by the imposing sky, which takes up two-thirds of the image and seems to weigh heavily on his shoulders. What could have been a moonlit stroll has thus turned into a nightmare that plunges us into a paradoxical atmosphere. On the one hand, the full moon and the watercolor-blue sky give us the impression that the night is peaceful, whereas in the lower third of the drawing, we are witnessing a kind of ordeal. “I wanted to depict Lucky Luke as a helpless trapper, with ill-fitting boots and no gear for walking in the snow. Showing him like this, in distress and in the cold, reminds me a bit of the adventurers of the impossible— Or mountaineers trapped on ice walls. These are moments when you sense that the hero is in mortal danger.” M.B.
