Manara - Lot 209
Manara
MILO MANARA
GULLIVERIANA
Les Humanoïdes Associés 1996
Original plate no. 33.
India ink on paper
48 × 62.5 cm (18.9 × 24.61 in.)
In Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift projects his hero into societies where he finds himself sometimes tiny, sometimes giant, among madmen, or among superbly intelligent beings. Manara further overturns the codes by imagining Gulliver... as a woman. The reader's gaze changes from a hero living a fantastic fable to a heroine whose sensuality invades the entire page. The story takes a back seat. It becomes a pretext. And it's Manara's talent to carry his heroine from square to square and situation to situation, leaving the reader in a pleasant, permanent daze.
