Tillieux - Lot 200
Tillieux MAURICE TILLIEUX GIL JOURDAN Chaud et Froid - Le Grand Souffle (T.11), Dupuis 1969 Original plate no. 18, prepublished in Le Journal de Spirou n° 1561, March 14, 1968. India ink on paper 39.2 × 48.9 cm (15.43 × 19.25 in.) There's nothing like a beautifully executed plate by Tillieux to immediately immerse you in the action. The "Grand Souffle" is a machine capable of generating violent winds, the work of a scientist secretly developing an unprecedented weapon. The theme is a classic of anticipation (remember Jacobs' SOS Météores), always effective when you want to evoke a stormy atmosphere conducive to suspense. And there's no shortage of it in this sequence, in which Gil Jourdan is trapped in a cave where the water is rising inexorably. The unbearable suspense is offset by the detective's companions, always ready with a good word to advance the plot.
