Franquin - Lot 195
Franquin ANDRÉ FRANQUIN Original illustration, unpublished self-portrait from the Idées noires period, produced in 1976. Signed. India ink and felt pen on paper 19 × 19 cm (7.48 × 7.48 in.) In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche divides creators into two groups: the Apollonians, who embody control, order, mastery and harmony... Hergé, Moebius and Joost Swarte come to mind... and the Dionysians, who find pleasure in abandonment, ecstasy, loss of the senses, excess and freedom in disorder... Reiser, Druillet and even Jean Giraud come to mind. Franquin comes from both groups: in his line, particularly in Les Idées noires, there's abundance, pleasure, profusion, the staccato of liberated laughter; and at the same time, there's a perfection, a control in letting go, a need to push the logic of the drawing to the limits of absurdity. He demonstrates this here!
