A recent retrospective of the Belgian artist's work at Daniel Maghen Gallery offered a close-up view of the drawings for Ernest et Célestine, children's books created by Monique Martin, alias Gabrielle Vincent. With its soft, expressive watercolors, cousins to the worlds of Victorian illustrator Beatrix Potter, the series recounts the tender friendship between Ernest, a musical bear, and Célestine, a lively little mouse. It's beautifully executed with soft brushstrokes. This moving, sensitive graphic design created a surprise in an Oscar-nominated cartoon in 2012.
