Cosey - Lot 177
Cosey COSEY JONATHAN L'Espace bleu entre les nuages (T.5), Le Lombard 1980 Original plate no. 14, prepublished in Le Journal de Tintin belge n° 30, July 25, 1978. Signed. India ink on paper 34.3 × 46.8 cm (13.5 × 18.43 in.) In Jonathan, snow-covered landscapes, Himalayan peaks and silent valleys offered Cosey the opportunity to compose long perspectives, to let the page breathe with large, luminous white spaces, veritable graphic pauses that accompanied the hero's introspection. But here, the setting changes: the silence of the mountains gives way to the hushed confines of an incongruous Victorian house, rebuilt in Tibet by an eccentric Englishman. Cosey deploys another graphic pleasure: that of detail and controlled overload. In a splendid plate, he lingers on each piece of furniture, each hanging, each trinket, with loving meticulousness. In particular, we discover a dancer's figurine on a sideboard, drawn with delicate refinement. This unlikely encounter between East and West, between stripped-down spirituality and imperial nostalgia, creates a visual and narrative shock, mirroring the turmoil felt by Jonathan himself. This suspended moment is not just an exercise in style: it is nourished by a real experience, like a sublimated memory of Cosey's escapade in the Himalayas. The line becomes a graphic memory, and the setting a showcase for the strangeness of the world.
