Gibrat - Lot 159
Gibrat JEAN-PIERRE GIBRAT MATTÉO Première époque (1914-1915) (T.1), Futuropolis 2008 Original plate no. 3. Signed. Watercolor and acrylic inks on paper 37.5 × 55.5 cm (14.76 × 21.85 in.) This plate is a perfect illustration of Jean-Pierre Gibrat's art. Drawing, light and narration merge into a single poetic breath, and the narrative power is felt even in the absence of text, which is added later by computer. Three moments follow one another: a light, playful opening scene shows Juliette and Mattéo at work, unconcerned about who's watching them; then a wide shot unfurls the gentle Mediterranean landscape - vineyards, sea, golden hills - before the narrative tightens into the intimacy of a tête-à-tête where the awakening of feeling is expressed without words. Gestures are restrained, glances more eloquent than words. The composition plays on the contrast between the vast horizon and the proximity of the bodies: Gibrat inscribes love in the landscape, nature becoming the echo of a nascent emotion. Watercolor finesse sets Juliette, dressed in crimson, against a backdrop of diaphanous blues and summer golds. Nothing spectacular: just the suspended time of an ordinary life before the war disrupted its tranquility. A marvel. Red is the guarantee of a character's presence, almost the beginning of charisma. There was Cécile's polka-dot dress, Jeanne's beret, and now it's on Juliette's dress. Jean-Pierre Gibrat
