Gal, with his powerful works, made Métal Hurlant's heyday. Powerful is La Passion de Diosamante, scripted by the exceptional Alejandro Jodorowsky. It's the story of the proud, cruel queen of a sumptuous, decadent empire, who is disowned by her lover, the poet-king Urbal, who deems her unworthy of him. Stricken by this humiliation, she embarks on a journey of atonement through strange, mythical lands to regain her purity and earn his love. Graphically, Gal deploys a universe of hallucinatory sumptuousness, evoking, as in this page, cyclopean architectures worthy of the temples of Angkor. At the same time, his scarce output is quite rare.
