This typical western scene, published as a bonus in the bibliophile edition, allows Ralph Meyer, like Gustave Courbet, to demonstrate his mastery of engraving aesthetics. In addition to the horse's coat, he has paid particular attention to its hatched shadow on the ground. Black & white illustrations are often an opportunity to go a little further in the treatment of materials. This could lead to heaviness, in a plate where each frame is narrative and dependent on those around it. This is not the case in an illustration that stands on its own. I had good documentation, which enabled me to take care of the details of the saddle and the gun rack. R.M.
