What could be worse than the image of a child's coffin? It could be unbearable. But it's not. On the contrary, it exudes a peaceful atmosphere, thanks to the morning sun peeking through the trees and the autumnal colors of the background. The backlighting on Jonas, whose gaze encourages compassion, accentuates this impression of gentleness. The whole point of this image was to make it bearable for the reader, despite the extreme harshness of what it represents. Hence the use of all these devices: soft light, serene landscape, backlighting... to caress the eye and make us empathize. R.M.
