What collector hasn't dreamed of acquiring the very first plate in a series that has become legendary? Ralph Meyer impresses with his mastery of staging. Progressive plunge, counter-plunge, the vultures are relentless as Jonas graphically reveals his personality. An opening panel, and already a summit. It's been 10 years since I left this panel. For Jonas's first appearance, the reader had to grasp, in a single image, that he was facing a mortician far removed from clichés. In my opinion, this is Undertaker's most emblematic visual. R.M.
