Action, action... and a touch of melancholy. What can Ariane be thinking about? Is she remembering the past, her intimate wounds? Nicknamed Plume-aux-Vents, she has a wandering soul. The young woman hasn't let go yet. All she's done is kick off her shoes and agree to pose beside him, her boots, cape and hat. A contrast to the quartet of Iroquois charging behind her. Are they on the warpath? Despite their fierce demeanor, you'd almost think they were four kids having fun... Though their weapons don't really look fake. Watch out! A flock of wild ducks think it safer to fly away. A tree in the center divides the image in two.
Nature has to be alive, it has to be inhabited too, by the trees of this country, the animals of this country, the Indians of this country. A.J.
Calm and storm. This illustration perfectly sums up L'Oiseau-Tonnerre, the second volume of Plume aux vents. André Juillard drew partial inspiration from it for several of his cover designs. Daniel Maghen published the image in silkscreen in 1996. Twenty-five years later, André puts the original black-and-white drawing into color. Ah! that "Juillard yellow" sky!
