Juillard - Lot 68
Juillard ANDRÉ JUILLARD THE 7 LIVES OF THE SPARROWHAWK La Marque du Condor (T.7), Glénat 1991 Original plate no. 18. India ink on paper 32.4 × 44.9 cm (12.76 × 17.68 in.) Plate 18, upper section. An exterior sequence shot, cut into four vignettes, sweeps across the facade of a Parisian townhouse. Rather than immediately discovering the appearance of the occupants, we follow their discussion bubble by bubble. The first reproaches the other for doing as he pleases... The second retorts that they once made a deal. The camera glides from window to window. Simple yet original, the narrative technique is a testament to Cothias' and Juillard's expertise. In the first panel, André discreetly adds a little man relieving himself at the corner of a wall. Plate 18, lower section. Field against field, Germain Grandpin and Baroness de Troïl spar. Will Ariane prevail against the Condor? I remembered the cloak-and-dagger films of my youth, Captain Fracasse and Lagardère. What's more, I found some 17th-century engravings in the Musée des Arts Déco in Paris, depicting duels, with all the boots on. A.J.
