GREG
ACHILLE TALON
Original plate published in Pilote
n° 267, December 3, 1964. India ink on paper
33.7 × 40.5 cm (13.27 × 15.94 in.)
Greg's importance in Franco-Belgian comics should not be underestimated. Not only was he a major scriptwriter for Franquin, Hermann, Vance and Dany, but he was also a cartoonist who synthesized the Franquinian style of the Marcinelle School with the Hergéan style of the Brussels School. He also played a key role as editor-in-chief of Tintin during the golden years, and later as publisher of Dargaud. His contribution to the newspaper Pilote with Achille Talon remains cardinal. In this series, there's an exceptional play on language and a reflection on the medium of comics. For example, in this panel imagining a hero of the future in 1864. The editors find the gag of the logorrheic Achilles unfunny and unbelievable. The characters are Pilote's editors-in-chief, René Goscinny, always portrayed as a potentate, and Jean-Michel Charlier, with his legendary overweight.
