Éditions de la Séguinière 1985

Iznogoud was one of Goscinny's favorite series, as he could sacrifice the most improbable puns to it. After his death in 1977, Tabary, like Albert Uderzo, set up his own publishing house, Editions de la Séguinière. In this album, he follows in the footsteps of Goscinny, who had turned the series into a burlesque-satirical reflection on politics and power. The mechanics are fine, always a pretext for puns. Here again, the "cratophile" (who loves power) Iznogoud, always ready to overthrow the Caliph (but as Goscinny remarked: "How can you overthrow a man who's lying down?"), joins forces with a bandit not much more reliable than himself. But it soon turns into a farce: as usual, traitors betray each other and traps are sprung. Power remains a mirage for the Grand Vizier. Tabary's drawing, grimacing and nervous like the acting of Louis de Funès, wonderfully expresses this carnival of lust. The cover, typical of Tabary's style, also pays tribute to Asterix's punch.
