Sergio Toppi has a unique place in Italian comics, as much for his free, decorative layout as for his pictorial style inspired by medieval art and Art Nouveau. Here we have a good example of his freedom of tone, akin to that of Hugo Pratt: in the foreground a hieratic figure, adorned with ornaments; and behind him, airy and relaxed, his hero observes him. Sergio Toppi's rhythmic, musical pen-and-ink drawings remain a model of graphic daring. In 1975, his work earned him the Yellow Kid, Italy's highest distinction for comics.
