OLIVIER LEDROIT
BLACK MOON CHRONICLES
The Scarlet Dance (T.5),
Dargaud 1994
Original double plate no. 18-19.
Signed. India ink on paper
100 × 65 cm (39.37 × 25.59 in.)
Ledroit is a worthy successor to Druillet, with his Wagnerian style, the luxuriance of his line flowing with power, engulfing the viewer in an invasive, apocalyptic organic matter. In this splash page, Ledroit delivers one of his most baroque, flamboyant and detail-saturated plates. This pivotal tome (the series has just moved from Zenda to Dargaud), La Danse écarlate, tells the story of a battle and its preparations. Suddenly, war is upon us, and the alliance between Whismer Hill and the Black Moon has opened the gates of hell. The battle is terrible, hallucinatory, gripping! It's a wargame universe, literally, a new form of atmosphere and narrative that will leave a deep mark on readers' imaginations for decades to come.
