CHALAND - Lot 106
CHALAND YVES CHALAND ◊ Spirou by Yves Chaland, Dupuis 2013 Fake cover for Journal de Spirou no. 82 made in the early 1980s. Signed. India ink and colored inks on paper 18.3 × 27.8 cm (7.2 × 10.94 in.) Often Chaland, for his own pleasure - but not only him: Serge Clerc or Luc Cornillon had the same practices - would salvage old Spirou bindings and set about restoring them. With a bookbinder's meticulousness, he would give them a cardboard binding, a percaline or paper spine, and when the cover proved to be missing, he would redesign one, trying to rediscover the magic of illustration, following in the footsteps of Franquin, who produced most of them (no fewer than a hundred!) between 1946 and 1967. This fake cover is one of the first he produced when, with Luc Cornillon, he was drawing animations for Métal Hurlant, collected in their album Captivant.
