YVES CHALAND ◊ FREDDY LOMBARD Vacations in Budapest (T.4), Les Humanoïdes Associés 1988 Original plate no. 19. India ink on paper 32.5 × 43.8 cm (12.8 × 17.24 in.) Vacances à Budapest, a story written by Yann, alludes to the Soviet Union's suppression of the Hungarian uprising in 1956. It's a wild tale, in which young Lazlo, who receives private Latin lessons from Dina, returns to Hungary, against his aunt's advice, accompanied by our harebrained Freddy and Sweep, obviously eager for adventure... We're here in Hungary, in the house of Lazlo's uncle, who keeps him locked up. It's a slightly confusing album, since Freddy has set his ball to zero, sacrificing his Tintin-like wick. Yves Chaland is at his best, always immensely precise in his execution of detail in a Ligne Claire with legendary stylization.
