I love the nude, in that it brings us closest to the state of nature, to our animal side. Six years ago, I embarked on a series of twenty-seven erotic, and sometimes even pornographic, paintings, which may soon be collected in a book. When I started this series, I had in mind Histoire d'O, the sultry novel by Pauline Réage (alias Dominique Aury), as well as Picasso's erotic drawings, German painter Hans Bellmer's La Poupée and the Austrian Bruno Schulz's SM and fetish drawings in pencil. Set against a black or blue background, these erotic stagings precede the moment when the couple make love. Everything takes place in the same room, with the occasional glimpse of a bed, but the faces remain in shadow. J.-M.R.
