In the first image of this series devoted to the great Alpine massifs, Rochette puts the bear in majesty in the Vercors. Imposing, yet debonair, in this charcoal-enhanced wash, the plantigrade planted in the snow seems to contemplate the surrounding peaks. Graphically, I like the slightly abstract treatment of the mountains, their blurred aspect that we don't perceive at first glance. The realism of the image is only apparent, so soon after this first impression, you realize that abstraction is everywhere. J.-M.R.
