YSLAIRE - Lot 119
YSLAIRE SAMBER Cursed be the fruit of her womb... (T.5), Glénat 2003 Original illustration for an ex-libris from the album's first edition. India ink, colored ink and graphite on paper 33.6 × 40.6 cm (13.23 × 15.98 in.) This drawing perfectly encapsulates Bernard Hislaire's world. First, there's the tonality, black and red. The black of anarchy, of death; the red of revolt, of blood. The barricades of the February 1848 revolution, the crucible of ideologies that would bloody the century to come. And then, women, men and their burning passions. Julie, carrying the curse within her and upon her, her son Bernard-Marie, naïve and romantic, and cousin Guizot, intriguing and devious. The angel of Renommée flies unmoved over these paltry agitations.
