PIERRE PROBST
PIERRE PROBST CAROLINE Caroline en randonnée, Hachette 1982 Original illustration, pages 4 and 5. The contents of the diary, kept by Youpi, have been printed and affixed to the original. Gouache and pen on paper 52 × 37 cm (20.47 × 14.57 in.) Pierre Probst, an excellent illustrator who worked notably on the collections La Vie secrète des hommes and La Vie secrète des bêtes, owes his fame to the Caroline series, created in 1953. Such was its success that his publisher, Hachette, offered him an exclusive contract. A year ahead of its competitor Martine by Gilbert Delahaye and Marcel Marlier (Casterman), Caroline is one of the pillars of the "Les Albums roses" collection, an extension of the eponymous Bibliothèque aimed at young female readers. Needless to say, many young girls owe their first names to her.
