For this image, created for the deluxe version of Le Joueur d'échecs, I created a contrast between the calm, composed figure and the sharp, unstructured motifs in the background: a way of representing Mr. B's mental state. The coloring was done with inks and watercolors, with the addition of gouache. The gouache, which I didn't use for the album, adds the extra texture and density I wanted for this illustration.
