JEAN-CLAUDE FOREST BARBARELLA Barbarella (T1), Le Terrain Vague 1964 Original plate no. 46, prepublished in V magazine in 1962. India ink and colored inks on paper 34 × 48.3 cm (13.39 × 19.02 in.) What makes the Barbarella series so special is that it blends two "bad genres" threatened by censorship at the time: eroticism and science fiction. Jean-Claude Forest's inventive, poetic universe heralded a new approach to SF comics that would influence both Christin and Mézières for Valérian, and the later work of Moebius. It was a revolution that narrowly escaped the wrath of the censors, and became world-famous thanks to Roger Vadim's mythical film of the same name starring Jane Fonda. It's also an elegant, classic work, masterfully executed with a brush. The indications in blue ink are intended for chromists for two-color printing.
