In 1987, a UFO landed in the bins of our sleepy booksellers: La Saison des Cendres, Volume 1 of the Légendes des contrées oubliées cycle, drawn - or should I say "illuminated" - by Thierry Ségur. His precise, flamboyant drawing perfectly matched this heroic fantasy story of a voyage of initiation. At the time, tales of quests in strange, exotic and fascinating worlds were rare; only La Quête de l'Oiseau du temps had transported us to Elsewhere. Ségur's work was so new in terms of drawing that it already gave a foretaste of 3D, notably through the rapid movements of its monstrous - and seductive! - characters - dwarf-dragons, dwarf-warriors, super-powered warriors - and the strange reliefs of its landscapes, flora and fauna overflowing the frames. The multiplication of almost invisible details is essential to the special atmosphere that emanates from his direct-color originals. Ségur is a true creator of worlds. Georges Simonian
