WILL - Lot 97
WILL ISABELLE Original cover from Journal de Spirou n° 2959, December 28, 1994. Signed. India ink, colored inks and graphite on paper 23.1 × 33 cm (9.09 × 12.99 in.) If there's one work that epitomizes the "Marcinelle School", it's the Isabelle series created by Yvan Delporte when he was ousted as editor-in-chief of Spirou in 1968. His friend Raymond Macherot joined him for the script, and Will, the illustrator of Tif & Tondu, drew the poetic and fanciful characters, including sorcerers, macrals and other fantastic characters, often drawn from popular Walloon folklore. Isabelle is one of the first heroines of the Journal de Spirou. She's a little girl whose astonished face wanders through a fantastic world in the company of her uncle Hermes and his fiancée Calendula. Here, she is accompanied by Calendula in a direct-color cover, a rarity in Spirou, whose colors were provided by Studio Leonardo.
