GOTLIB
MARCEL GOTLIB La Page nécessaire de M. Gotlypède, original plate published in Fluide glacial n° 97 of June 20, 1984. Signed. India ink on paper 36.2 × 45.5 cm (14.25 × 17.91 in.) It is not surprising that Marcel Gotlib and the famous humorist Pierre Desproges met in this comic strip: they are both monuments of humor, adept at stand-up comedy, and both play a character, a "dingo-investigator" who teaches the viewer/reader his lesson (Mr. Blurp with Goscinny, before he intervenes himself for Gotlib; Monsieur Cyclopède for Desproges). They share a taste for absurd and non-conformist humor, bordering on provocation. It is clear that they would have to worry today about what Caroline Fourest calls "the plague of sensitivity". Pierre Desproges is a reference in the field of humor, frequently quoted for his sentence: "You can laugh at everything, but not with everyone". And indeed, the Necessary Minute of Mr. Cyclopède was a one-minute program broadcast every evening on FR3 between 1982 and 1984. Desproges appeared there, as here, impassive, in front of the camera, spouting his absurd thoughts on themes as "itchy" as "let's learn to recognize a communist", "let's try in vain to hide our anti-Semitism", "let's make the wrath of God profitable" or "let's humiliate the chancellor Hitler". Gotlib is, like him, an arpeggio of the ridiculous, relying on details - like this bow tie that flies off at the end of the page - to pulverize any spirit of of seriousness.
