WILL TIF AND TONDU Le Retour de Choc (T.5), Dupuis 1957 Original plate n° 12, prepublished in the Journal de Spirou n° 917 of November 10, 1955. India ink and white gouache on paper 35.5 × 47.8 cm (13.98 × 18.82 in.) Very nice plate of a story where Maurice Rosy installs the character of Choc as the nemesis of the adventurous couple, created in 1938 by Fernand Dineur. The stylist Will - who at that time was going back and forth as a layout artist for the newspaper Tintin - also found his marks by making his characters evolve in the South of France that he loved so much, with its landscapes punctuated by cypress trees and its villas, each marked by a "modern" architectural gesture inspired by Le Corbusier or Jean Van Dosselaere. In addition, the interior design was influenced by the Borsani brothers' Tecno firm, or by the paintings of Henri Matisse, Saul Steinberg or Raoul Dufy. Rarely has the comic strip reached such heights of elegance.
